Mayflower Hotel, rooftop restaurant fire, 1961

Fire in the sky. An old-fashioned deep-fryer in a rooftop restaurant caused a heart-stopping 2-alarm fire at the Mayflower Hotel on the afternoon of July 20, 1961. Two fire companies hoisted ladders, but they only reached the seventh floor of the 12-story building. Guests were evacuated from top floors but soon returned to their rooms when firefighters quenched the blaze.
