Of all 50 states, Florida has the sixth highest number of unsolved homicides: between 1965 and 2021, nearly 20,000. Yet the motto of Project: Cold Case is “Because One Unsolved Murder Is Too Many.” The advocacy platform grew from Cliff Backmann’s unsolved 2009 murder. Now Project: Cold Case represents families from Florida to Alaska, though every family’s grief is the center of the world.

Truly this story has it all. The old Armory has stories enough for a hundred cities. There’s no way to tease it adequately. Urban exploration. Thousands of concerts, from opera to Janis Joplin and the Allman Brothers. Political debates and politicians’ funerals and boxing bouts. Stories of integration (James Weldon Johnson, Duke Ellington, Marian Anderson) defiant against Jim Crow. And a call for a future.

The Rosenberger House stands still, but its lives have circuited great distances. Now it’s the new home for Community Loaves. This old brick Murray Hill house would never have been built but for those immigrants from Germany and that Pittsburgh streetcar tragedy. Community Loaves would never have revived this former boarding house but for Meredith’s environmentalism and her “woofing” on farms across the ocean. From the Rosenbergers’ pets and “the best mouser in Murray Hill” to the best birthday cake in town, click here for the full story.
