There are four identical statues of Andrew Jackson, seventh president, on horseback. The best-known statue is the one in Jackson Square, New Orleans.
Another is in Nashville, Tennessee. Another is in Washington, D.C. The fourth is in Jacksonville, Florida.
For years Jacksonville’s copy of the statue of the city’s namesake was perched behind a lesser-used entrance to the Jacksonville Landing, a half-empty shopping mall built downtown in the 1980s, just west of the Main Street Bridge.
In 2010, the statue was moved to a new roundabout at the southern end of Laura Street, just north of the Landing.
After he signed the Indian Removal Act of 1830, President Andrew Jackson said, “The only good Indian is a dead Indian.” Jackson on his horse is one of the few public statues in the 874.3 square miles the city claims for itself.
