Across her open mouth and between her teeth are visible the words from Eleanor in Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House, “What breath of mindless fear / will drift across my mouth.” Above her mouth, where her nose should be, a corner of the tall house rises into a turret, and instead of two eyes, Heather has many windows.
