Of all 50 states, Florida has the sixth highest number of unsolved homicides: between 1965 and 2021, nearly 20,000. Yet the motto of Project: Cold Case is “Because One Unsolved Murder Is Too Many.” The advocacy platform grew from Cliff Backmann’s unsolved 2009 murder. Now Project: Cold Case represents families from Florida to Alaska, though every family’s grief is the center of the world.

Once, neighborhood kids rode horses here. Then motorcycles. Now they call it the best place in the city to ride mountain bikes. Each story of the woods once called “Mud Hills,” and now Beach and Peach Park, tells a different facet of human experience. The homeless man in the “hut” of stone slabs knows it differently than the neighbor with his scotch who relitigates fourth-down plays from his days as high school quarterback hero. George and Winnie Sharrow slipped into their small car in Southside Estates and the car bomb blew them to pieces. Police began to speculate a gangland war might be brewing between the Outlaws and Hell’s Angels. Florida had been a “battleground state,” not just for electoral college votes, but for biker allegiance, and the war was waged through women.
